It is not appropriate for a government to tithe. The tithe is a reflection of a heart attitude towards God. A government has no heart.

Isn't government tithing really social welfare & grants for medical/educationalbusiness purposes? And because they leave God out of the picture, isn't that why the government so thoroughly fails to see fruit in this endeavor?

I agree it is not appropriate to tithe someone else's money. You tithe on money you earned yourself.

My first thought when I read the title of this thread was "That's the STUPIDEST thing I have ever heard of". Upon further reflection, even in a "what if" mindset it simply can not be entertained as an idea. I'd just love to hear what the ACLU would do if 10% of everything the government took in went to churches. Yeah, right! The separation of church and state would simply prohibit this from getting off the ground so why even think "what if"?

The ACLU wouldn't exist because if the government was tithing then it would mean that the people agreed....if the people agreed with tithing, that would mean the people were Christians or shared their morals, and if the folks all shared those morals.....nobody would need the ACLU. What a wonderful world that would be.....
That is how you do a "What if"! I agree with Wild Rose's grandma! It's amazing how seriously everyone has taken this thread! It was for fun! Oh well....

Actually, for the government to tithe would be a violation of the constitution of the United States. Further to whom would the government tithe? Would you agree with them "tithing" to a Jewish synagogue? How about to a Moslem Mosque? Should the tithe go to Rome to the Roman Catholic Church? Maybe they should tithe to the Hindus...or Hari Krishna's. Maybe the Mormons.

Again...it was a lighthearted question. It wasn't put out there for folks to get all political about. That's interesting....
Nobody came up with the answer I expected..... anyone out there got it? It's obvious! Remember it's a "What if" as in use your imagination....don't get technical everybody. I really regret starting this thread...everyone took it too seriously.

I can narrow it down....what if everyone agreed to the tithing, and it went to a ministry or ministries of God's choosing? How do you think that would change things? Make it different from the way it is?
And what if everyone on the planet followed the command "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."?

Actually, the government currently spends more than it brings in and owes more to foreign governments than is owed to it...so the government really doesn't have any money to tithe...even if it wanted to. And as for "God's choosing" hate break it to you, but who's going to decide what God chose? All you have to do is read a few threads in the Theology folder and you will find out that "God's choosing" will depend on who you ask.
There are only two conditions under which everyone on the planet followed the command "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Either every one is dead, or Jesus has returned and ushered in the New Heaven and the New Earth and we are all now in heaven or the other place. In both of these cases, there wouldn't be a government to tithe to anybody.
