I know that's a fruit of the Spirit, hence it's supernatural. But what does it feel like? How intense is it? How constant should it be? Does it help supercede other negative emotions?

Joy is knowing that we are saved through Jesus our Lord.

Joy is obedience to His word.

Joy is when our circumstances cause us pain and suffering - we are able reach deep into the well inside us and know that God is in control and we experience His strength, peace and joy.

Joy is waking up in the morning with a song in our heart.

Joy is reading God's word and finding something we never saw before.

Joy is knowing that we have a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Joy is an emotion that can be separated from other feelings that we may experience in our daily lives. Happiness, sadness, anger, disappointment, and worrisome are all emotions which are easy to explain, but I feel joy transcends all emotions. Joy, in my own words, is a wholesome contentment and progressive internal hope toward life and beyond. Joy is an emotion that can be coupled with other emotions. I believe you can be happy, sad, angry, or emotionally inclined in many ways but still have joy. Joy is a long term foundational emotion and, although carried day by day, is more generalized to our feeling and outlook.

God bless,

Good thoughts. Joy(peace)is an absolute quantity of Christ Jesus' obedience/Victory that we(as redeemed souls)share. A redeemed soul can have true joy(and peace)in the most difficult and trying circumstance(remember Paul/Silas in jail?)because he's not dependent on comfort or happiness rather His obedience/Victory.

RE:ISRAEL'S SONG OF REDEMPTION(Exodus 15:1-3)

'...With all the talk about peace today it might be well for everyone to read this song of Moses. It tells us that Jehovah is a man of war. In the nineteenth chapter of Revelation we see Him coming to earth and putting down all unrighteousness(the 'final peace'). Until He does that, the earth will never have peace. In Matthew 10:34 the Lord said, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." These words were spoken about His first coming to the earth. The second time He comes to earth He will bring peace with the sword. That is the only way to rid the earth of unrighteousness.'(J Vernon
McGee, 'Thru the Bible')

Very good thoughts thus far!

To me, Happiness is based on external circumstances that we enjoy. Joy is based on an internal reality based on our relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ and sealed by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

I guess I could say that it is all in the source: The source for Happiness is temporal things, where the source for Joy is in eternal things.

It is that thing that you get when you've gone through the fire, you realize that it was God that brought you through it, and you are thankful from the tip of your head to your toes. You can't experience this without joy. We cannot manufacture this kind of joy.

Well, the reason why I'm asking is because I had an unusual experience a while ago. It felt like I took a happy pill. Very interesting. I know what God's peace felt like and it's totally different. Peace leaves you emotionally neutral. Joy on the other hand is much more buoyant. Much more. After all, the Bible does not say the peace of God is our strength but joy. Joy is also independent of any activity. Like peace, it's a state of being.

I was also wondering where Christ got his energy for his ministry given that he divested himself of any self initiated supernatural assistance. Now if he had joy like I experienced, it would explain a lot. So I would think that joy should be a natural state of being for a believer. And if it's not, why not?

Our first natural state was nakedness. As toddlers, we would run around naked and think nothing of it. As we matured, we eventually learned modesty and that we must cover ourselves.

As we mature in our spiritual walk, we learn about the joy of Lord from the Holy Spirit.

Jas:1:2: My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
Jas:1:3: Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

Ne:8:10: Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Hello V

Many will tell you that joy comes after being saved. Yes but there are other times in which the Lord builds joy into one's heart. It comes from being in touch with the Lord. It is enhanced when one is filled with the Spirit. No one can learn to have it because it becomes part of one's new nature in Christ.

Why don't you go to the Lord in prayer and ask for more of it? then you would really know.

True Joy is being happy in the Lord despite whats going on in life, even if things aren't going well.We can be happy despite the pain since we know Jesus is always here for us.
