That's a tough one to answer. I always thought Ryan Gosling's acting was and is exceptional. Another young actor would be Jamie Bell who has I believe a lot of potential.
Matt Dillon has done some good work and I don't think gets acknowledged for it much.
I'm sure there are more I just can't think of any right now.
I thought of two more .... Christian Bale and Heath Ledger

Drew Seeley! They always make Zac Effron out to be this wonderful actor and yet, Drew Seeley truly is and you don't hear much about him!

Jason Stratham or Statham.
Dicaprio as long as he runs from titanic type movies lately has had some good movies.

i have always been a fan of Samuel L Jackson ever since viewing the movie 187. In another movie he plays a cop who is trying to find a lost child who was allegedly kidnapped out of a car in an all black neighborhood. Another great performance by a superb actor. In many ways i could relate to the teacher character in the movie 187. He desired to do good but was somehow twisted by his past horrible experiences.

Not sure about underrated, but the most perfect casting I can think of is:
Candice Bergen as Shirley Schmidt in Boston Legal
William Peterson as Gil Grissom in CSI

I think Claire Danes is totally believable and enchanting in any part, yet you don't see her at the head of the A-lister pack. Is she overlooked or just reserved? I do see her in quite a bit, so she's recognized, for sure.

Philip Seymour Hoffman - he is unbelievably good and could morph himself between good and evil character.

Yeah, same here. I've only really heard of Six-String Samurai. Which Netflix does carry, by the way. : ) But he just has a great energy/originality about him that I think would be interesting to see in more mainstream productions.

I would say:
John Goodman (Roseanne overshadows years of quality work)
Jeff Daniels (goes from Dumb and Dumber to The Squid and the Whale, writes his own plays)
Gary Oldman (carries more than one movie from a supporting role...but he is pretty well respected)
Laura Linney (totally solid in every role)
Frances McDormand (steals 5 minute scenes in throw-away roles)

I always blank on these kinds of questions - I'll think of someone trying to fall asleep tonight. I agree with William Peterson and Laura Linney mentioned above. We saw Laura Linney on Broadway with Liam Neison in the Crucible...they're both fabulous!! I have always loved anything with Robert Downey Jr. Even the weird stuff. I think he's an amazing talent. I know since Ironman he probably can't be considered unerrated. But maybe. Iron Man was certainly not his best work. There were times in Chaplin that I couldn't tell what was Downey and what was footage of Charlie Chaplin.

I see Robert Downey Jr. as the Everyday Man for screwed up people. I like him :)

I think Ioan Gruffudd is very underrated. People know him from Fantasic Four, but I think that he's had much better performances.
