I have seen these at a few stores. They are wireless type video game systems like the Wii. The two I've seen use batteries and don't plug in. They don't seem to be able to use cartridges but just use the games that come with them: things like bowling, tennis, golf, a couple others like the sports pack that comes with Wii.

Has anyone used these? Are they any good? Or a total waste of money?

I haven't used them but rest assured that they are wastes of money. You will quite disappointed with them. I'd suggest just waiting/saving till you can get a Wii if you really want one.

Also the Wii itself is meant for multiple players and you won't get the most out of it if you don't: 1. Spend a lot of money on controllers 2. Have a lot of people to play with.

I'd suggest going to a local "Gamestop" store and speak in depth to a salesman.

NO. no. Just no.

You might get lucky and find a Gamestop employee who actually knows what he/she is talking about, but even if you do, they'll be too busy trying to sell you a pre-order to actually give decent advice. Gamestop has horrible business practices, and IMO consumers should avoid them. (If there are any independent game shops still alive in your area, give them a shot, though.)

Really? What sort of things do they do? Maybe I haven't spent enough time in there to notice, but I haven't had any negative dealings with them. Granted, I generally try to avoid putting myself in a position where I'm asking advice from a greasy teenager with backwards hair and a warcraft addiction. The store's usually so packed that they're busy behind the counter, and being stereotypical teenage game enthusiasts, have never really seemed motivated enough to give me a hard sell. Best Buy, OTOH... When I want help, I can't find anybody and when I don't want help they're swarming around me like killer bees.

I found that I often know more about computers and electronics than the person selling them does. Now back to the topic.

Well, from what I've been told by ex- and current employees and customers:
  • They basically use customers as a screening system for defective used games. They don't regularly check to see if used games they're reselling actually work, or are even visibly scratched. Sure, you can come back and trade your defective copy for another one, but it's wasting the customer's time. Maybe wasted time at Gamestop is better to some people than the risk of getting a defective copy when buying off of eBay or other used source online, but Gamestop charges a lot more for the privilege of testing used games for them (Then they ship the scratched games off to be resurfaced and eventually make money off of them anyway).

  • They sell used games as new, and encourage employees to open new games before giving them to the customer so that they can't be returned as new.

  • They take pre-orders without having the stock to actually mean that pre-order will guarantee a copy.

Those are just what I've heard confirmed by multiple sources. Allegations of corproate expecting employees to work off-the-clock, that corproate unoffically approves of buying games known to be stolen (at least one store has actually been prosecuted for this), are harder to verify. And there are debatable issues, like if it's actually worth it to buy a used game at Gamestop for $5 less than new when you can save more by buying used elsewhere, or if it's worth it to sell your used games to Gamestop.

I agree about the knock-offs. A game that only plays one (or a few) games is a total waste of money.
The Wii comes with more fun things to do out of the box than these dedicated machines can, and it plays games from a variety of systems, including Wii and GameCube using the CD slot and NES/Sega/Etc. through the virtual console, as well as WiiWare (VC and WW games downloadable from the shopping channel).

But I strongly disagree about the comments on the Wii being only for multiplayer. Since I got mine, I've mostly been playing single-player games. Sure, it's a lot of fun to sit down and play a party game like MarioParty8 with four people, but you can also play single-player games like Legend of Zelda (I've played Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time on my Wii) and Mario Galaxy.

Regarding Gamestop, I don't argue with anything that's been said, but my experiences with them have been nothing but positive, and I greatly value the guarantee that if the used disc I bought doesn't work or isn't what I wanted, I can get another one (same or equal value) with no hassle. I can't get that with eBay.

I have decided not to buy one and wait for Wii's to come down in price.

I have seen people have a lot of fun playing it by themselves. I have friends with one and our home fellowship sometimes has Wii nights. One guy in the group will play 9 holes of golf before everyone gets there and we all get started. The people who own it talk about all the times they play by themselves.

I think you'd do better to sock away money in a fun fund while you wait. I don't think the price of the Wii system is unreasonably high (esp. compared to the PS3), and I don't think it's going to come down any time soon. If you build a fun fund, you'll get it eventually whether the price comes down or not.

I agree. It's $250, which is on the low side for modern consoles and it's still selling VERY well. Demand has not been an issue, so I don't see why they would drop the price.

It's likely that Nintendo will release multiple colors when demand finally starts to drop. That will cause a surge in sales (it works just about every time a new color of Nintendo DS comes out), and they'll put off dropping the price for a while longer.
