You usually don't want more than 2.5 times your salary and no more than 25% of your income. So if you make 50,000 then you should be looking at no more than 130-140,000. If you are in a high cost of living area you could pay a little more.. but if you get to 30, 40% of your income you'll be stretching it and you wouldn't be able to have any other debt. You can make an appointment with a mortgage person, they won't start the paperwork if you can't afford it cause they won't waste their time. You'll need to pull up your w-2s and stuff, they usually consider the last two years of income.
