If we weren't fighting terrorists in the mid east over the past 7 or so years, you can bet we would've been fighting them in the US. Below is just one news story of the reality of a few years ago.

***WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A plot to carry out a large-scale terror attack against the United States in the near future is being directed by Osama bin Laden and other top al Qaeda members, senior intelligence officials said Thursday.

Bin Laden and his top lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, are overseeing the attack plans from their remote hideouts somewhere along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, according to senior intelligence officials.

"This type of plotting, this type of operational activity, is being done with the direct direction and authorization of that senior leadership," said one official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Democratic senator who attended Thursday's CIA and FBI briefing said, "It is the most worrisome situation since 9/11" without elaborating specifically.***

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/07/08/ridge.alqaeda/index.html

Obviuosly its easy now to take 7 years without terror attacks in the States for granted.

The terrorists weren't in Iraq until we went over and sent out engraved invitations. The War in Afghanistan went backwards because the US diverted vital military resources away from Afghanistan (where AQ is based). Terrorist attacks (including those by domestic groups) are always in the works. There is nothing happening with CIA, FBI, etc. that wouldn't be happening under any President.

The next big front in the WOT is the Horn of Africa where Islamic groups can operate with impunity. Again, having been preoccupied with Iraq, this administration is behind the curve, as usual.

Unlike the previous administration that was way ahead of the curve in regards to that portion of the world?

Clinton administration had a good idea, but didn't do the math and leaped into a hornet's nest, just like His Majesty. So, you are correct to point out the US is fifteen years slow to respond. having learned a few things, the US strategy now is to work with other countries in the region. E.g., the US is helping train and supply the African Union peacekeeping force. Not something the public gets excited about.

If you consider crashing through the guardrail into a tree ahead of the curve, then yes.

I was just using your words about what the US strategy now is in the area. I'm glad to have reached agreement on this with you.

I would say during Clinton we were off in the woods somewhere. The administration initially put it in overdrive but realized you can't get to overdrive going through the woods so they got us back on the road.

As for "Ahead of the Curve" since when is any government "Ahead" of anything? ; )

So how many more banks should totally collapse under this excellent Bush economy?

It's a good thing in this great economy with all of these banks falling all over the place that we have Dubya in charge:

quote:

"I know Americans are concerned about the adjustments that are taking place in our financial markets," said Bush, speaking in the White House Rose Garden. "We are working to reduce disruptions and minimize the impact on the [broader economy]."

Bush didn't offer much detail as the Dow plunged more than 200 points and the finance industry suffered one of its worst crises ever, stemming from its investments in the battered real estate sector.

"In the short run, adjustments in the financial markets can be painful, for people worried about their investments, and for employees of the firms," said Bush.

I like the part in the article where Paulson talks of working off the "excesses". What excesses could there possibly be? I thought there were only excesses under dems like the dot com boom that everyone talks of that busted and then they disregard everything that occured economically from '94 through 2000.

So looking at all the banks that have broken and at how many are teetering I am just thankful Dubya is in charge and there are absolute minimal government controls on them (compared to what was put on them after the '29 collapse) otherwise we'd have banks like Bear Stearns nad Lehman Brothers going under or needing help.

Correction: Texas is WEST, not South. His Excellency is a westerner, not a Southerner.

Oh, sorry. I reacted too quickly. I was so offended by anyone suggesting that he is from the South.

So the poor economy is all Bush's fault, along with any other American ill, but he deserves no credit for the fact that the US has had no major terror attacks over the past 7 years.

A mere technicality. State must have a member of the SEC or ACC to be part of the South.

Tell that to the families of the former slaves here in southeast Texas.

My point dear friend, is that Texas was a slave state.

****From Krauthammer: When I asked the president about his one unambiguous achievement, keeping us safe for seven years -- about 6 1/2 years longer than anybody thought possible just after Sept. 11 -- he was quick to credit both the soldiers keeping the enemy at bay abroad and the posse of law enforcement and intelligence officials hardening our defenses at home.

But he alluded also to some of the measures he had undertaken, including "listening in on the enemy" and "asking hardened killers about their plans." The CIA has already told us that interrogation of high-value terrorists such as Khalid Sheik Mohammed yielded more valuable intelligence than any other source. In talking about these measures, the president mentioned neither this testimony as to their efficacy nor the campaign of vilification against him that they occasioned. More equanimity still.

What the president did note with some pride, however, is that beyond preventing a second attack, he is bequeathing to his successor the kinds of powers and institutions the next president will need to prevent further attack and successfully prosecute the long war. And indeed, he does leave behind a Department of Homeland Security, reorganized intelligence services with newly developed capacities to share information and a revised FISA regime that grants broader and modernized wiretapping authority.

In this respect, Bush is much like Truman, who developed the sinews of war for a new era (the Department of Defense, the CIA, the NSA), expanded the powers of the presidency, established a new doctrine for active intervention abroad, and ultimately engaged in a war (Korea) -- also absent an attack on the United States -- that proved highly unpopular.

So unpopular that Truman left office disparaged and highly out of favor. History has revised that verdict. I have little doubt that Bush will be the subject of a similar reconsideration.****

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/18/AR2008091803049_pf.html

I agree that in time Bush will be looked at much more favorably.

Southern Wannabes. Texas and Arkansas were disowned when they joined the Southwest Conference. Arkansas was welcomed back as a prodigal son when the SWC folded and they joined the SEC.
