quote:
Take a look at a world map. Near Iran is a place called the Strait of Hormuz. It's the only way from the Gulf to the wider ocean. A LOT of oil tankers go through there... Fire missiles down there randomly and you'd quickly send the price of oil up into the stratosphere, which would, if sustained, take down much of the Western world. By your own logic, it would also devastate Iran's own economy. So clearly this is not a first strike option for them. Plus, Iran would have to have enough nuclear-capable missiles to fire "randomly," which, as I've pointed out, they do not. Plus, the Western world has plenty of sources of oil outside the Gulf and already relies on them for most of our oil. We'd take a severe hit, but not enough to "take us down." Iran, by contrast, would be ruined, since they need the oil profits to keep their economy alive. Japan would be in dire straits, but the rest of us would probably be able to stay together. I'm not suggesting that we should sit around a campfire and sing songs as a way of solving international problems. I'm just saying that we haven't reached a crisis stage with Iran and there's no reason to react as if we have.
