Sad to hear about the delay, Shallbe. I've not done substitute teaching, so I can't help you there.

I'm struggling through college algebra this summer term in preparation for the required math in the fall. I'm now mid-way through the first week, and I think things are beginning to come back to me. Probably by mid-week next week, I'll feel better about it, but it is tough, tough, tough.

Grace, did you decide to drive or fly?

hi people,

it's been a while but I heard from the chair of the Masters program and they are going to let me take Intro to Grad Studies again, but I have to pass with a B+ or better. So please pray I stay focused and do good work and get a good grade.

Thanks.

I was reading several posts about math and it can be difficult for some. It was very difficult for me. I changed the way I think about Math and that helped. I treat it in my studies as a foreign language and I study for them differently. I guess technically it is a language. I also lucked out. I lived on campus as a single dad for several years and one day I noticed 3 boxes of books outside math department. I asked about them and I was told to take them. The lady said the companies send the department boxes every semester for them to see if the professors want to use their textbooks and these were ones they chose not to. They were all different but all had CD’s with them and answer manuals. So I didn’t take a class that had those books but it allowed me access to online study guides and extra study material.
I doubt Univ. of Tn is any different than any other university. Ask around and ill bet most departments would be glad to get rid of non-usable textbooks.
Proud of all of you. University life is a struggle. When I opted for Law School my academic advisor told me I would be too old and as a single parent I wouldn’t be taken seriously. I was 54. I have remarried since but don’t ever tell me NO! I am headed to Law School. Have a blessed day
being in a spec ops group in the military even though that was many years ago. NO isnt an option unless of course its immoral or unethical

its great to have the opportunity to go back to school !!! I love the people that surround me all positive and the school I have been going to is like family there. I start the Nursing program at another starting sep 1 and it seems equally as good. I am utterly lonesome and bored during this summer. Seperated and missing my husband even though he was the bad one you cant be with someone 16 plus and not miss them.

My issue is I have been at school with no break till this summer for two years straight. I have two more to go. I am so frustrated thinking of TWO MORE YEARS. I want to be done and in my job NOW! That is the hard part for me.
TWO MORE YEARS its taking toooo long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daisy, I do understand that frustration. I was planning to graduate in December...and now it's another 3 semesters. My motivation is very low: if it had been just a wee bit higher, I would have made arrangements to work harder starting now so that I could graduate in the spring. But I looked at what it would take and my soul, God forgive it, just quelled and I couldn't face it.

So I'm going to take it a bit slower and easier. It will take longer and tie me down longer and cost more, but frankly I don't have another solution.

You can do this! You don't start again until September, so you've got a bit of a rest. Use it wisely, refill your "tanks", and you'll be fine. God's not in a hurry for you to finish school. He's going to make it come out in perfect timing.

(((((Shallbe))))) I'm sorry... I know how you were trying to get that class taken care of. But God knows what He's doing and since I know you rest in His arms, I know that He will carry you through this.

My intensive went well... I decided to fly there and back and am very glad I did! I love those classes... just one more to go, but I won't know anyone there next time (maybe). Oh well, there will be more people for me to meet. :-) (Let's just pray that one of them is single, male, willing & able!!!)

School is much more intense for me right now... we're into the meat & potatoes of what I'm going to be doing and I'm loving it! It's not easy, but it's challenging enough to really fun!

Got lots of (mostly positive) changes happening in my life right now. Please pray that I'm able to keep my focus on school and not all this other stuff going on.

Thanks GNM...sounds like you are having fun even though things are intense. I know that feeling, too, and am looking forward to having it return soon. I will pray with you that in your travels you find that Special Guy.

Debilyn, how is the math coming?

Daisy & ShallBe, keep on plugging. Discouragement can grow us or stunt us. We have to find a way to continue to grow even during those down times. Remember the "Footprints" poem? "It was then that I carried you." Stay in prayer, even when it doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Grace, I'm praying ...

Math (algebra) class update: After two tests, which everyone didn't do well on, the professor is "starting from the top." I'm soooo thankful, too. (Thank you, Lord for giving professor this idea.) I barely passed those tests, so going back to the beginning is great for me! The professor decided we would go back and redo our original homework assignments (plus a little more) in class. We work independently or together, but he is there to answer questions and help us work to solve problems that may be hard for us. After one class, many of us left feeling so much better. I feel like I'm understanding so much more now. I'm finally beginning to tread water.

It took me 3 years to finally get back in school, heck it took me that long to figure out what I wanted to do. Now im going for fashion design and I love it! I even kinda like the stress I get from it, but I'd be lieing if i didnt say that im not worried. I worry that im not good enough that I wont make it, and that my stuff will just compleatly suck. It's hard to deal with that sometimes, I've never had the highest self-esteem so convinceing my self to stick with it and that Im doing the right thing, is really heard for me. I keep waiting on this big sign from God saying that I'm doing the wrong thing, then I have to tell my self that God wants me to be happy as long as im constantly giving him praise. It's a never ending cycle, but that's ok, with God I'm making it. He really is the most amazing person ever, thanks to him I have a great guy, great family, a running car, and a school and career that I love. Sure it hard but it's good. Ya know untill now I havent really stopped and thought about what all I truly have to be happy about, Im glad I did.

To all of you who are thinking of going back to school, go and good luck, and to all thouse on here that are back in school good luck to you too. I hope your enjoying it

Hey Y'all!

I graduated high school in 1974. I looked at my transcript recently; I was lucky they let me out. I just went back to school and finished a 16-credit hour summer...and lived to tell about it.

Unfortunately, it was a local CC (transferring to the local Catholic university for the fall semester), so I have to wash my brain out with soap. What works best? Cheer, Tide, or one of the generics on the market? I do want that fresh, clean feeling...

Update: I passed College Algebra! Yay! Now, on to the course that "actually counts." I'm reviewing every other day until the class starts at the end of the month. Don't want to forget what I just learned. My memory is a sieve.

Lest I be accused of exagerration, I have the document in front of me: My senior year shows a GPA of 2.75. Eliminate the two fine arts courses where you got an A for fogging up a mirror held under your nose, and the score drops to 2.3. One of those senior courses, btw, was junior year English which, not taken, would have meant "no diploma." Suprised I wasn't a first-round draft pick for the Olympic Anarchy Squad.
(sigh) Back to my pathophysiology text...

Hey, just wondering how everyone's doing in their classes? This thread is a little quiet.

My next semester begins Monday and I'm excited about these classes... and just four more 8-week classes (plus internship) left to go until graduation!

Good for you, GNM! Hoping you have smooth, uneventful, challenging but fun classes.

I am finishing up my classes at my diploma institution this semester. In fact, on Monday I give my Senior Recital there, after which I will not have to attend there again except possibly to take the music MFAT, and then, of course, for graduation.

This all actually makes me sad. I have learned to love all the people there at Howard Payne, and there is still so much to learn...I fear losing what I've gained through lack of practice and challenge, yet I don't think I can afford to continue classes either just for myself or for a higher degree.

I think I'd like to actually teach at a college campus...but then, that requires a further degree. Oh, well. God will make clear what He wants me to do, and I have faith that He will not waste what He has enabled me to learn through this experience.

And of course, there's still French. 8 hours of that online. Then, and only then, can I graduate!

Sounds like I'll be finished before you, GNM.

shallbe

You're going to finish before me?? Yay!! I love graduations! If you finish in December, then you'll walk in May. I probably won't be able to walk in May because I won't finish until August. But that's ok, I'll still be able to walk with a friend!!

God is going to let you know where He wants to take you, and I'm sure it's going to be somewhere amazing!!

I'm envious of you taking French... it's a beautiful language and I keep telling myself I'm going to learn it again (took one year in high school) but never have jumped back on and made myself learn. Maybe one day.....

I finished my interviews last week and got official acceptance into my grad program. My first class begins Monday! I've already been offered an internship to begin at the end of my program, which is amazing this early on, so I am really excited. I've never done anything other than traditional semesters, so this will be a huge change and much faster paced, but I'm ready!

That's really cool. It seems to take so long to get to that point! I'm glad for you :)

Isn't it wonderful to know we are in His hands? Nothing is ever in vain when we are seeking after Him, even when we feel like we are floundering. That's a lot of comfort for me!

Hi, I got a really poor grade on my Literacy Review and got a '0' as in zero on my annotated bibliogrpahy because the teacher said I plagiarized and showed me how I did not attribute correctly. She will not allow me to do it over, so I am not doing well in the class. I must pass with a B and I now have a C. If I do not pass, I cannot continue in the program. So please pray I do well on my final paper and the final exam. If not, I have to look at other educational opportunities. Thanks.

I'm sorry eaglelady, do they allow you to retake the course? My program is like that and you can retake the course once.

I was accepted last year. My son got sick. Got it deferred to this year. Started in September on Library and Information Science. I'm taking 3 courses by computer and its insane. Actually, its not so bad now but the first 2 months was insane. ;) I am formally requested to go down to part time next semester by my husband.

Surprisingly I'm really loving the tech. courses (at least the intro ones).

Two 12-page papers and an exam and they'll let me out for the semester. I'm looking forward to a quiet month or so before we start again.

I went back to grad school this semester. I have a paper due on Thursday and then I'm done for the semester until class starts up again. It is due next week and I haven't yet started it. I do have a lot of ideas in my head, but today and tomorrow I'll be writing and at the library doing research. I don't have the money for the next semester yet and I'm getting worried. If the school offered a payment plan, things would work well because I could just do that. I'll probably enroll and trust God for the money. I have only 3 or 4 more classes to go until I graduate and I want to finish in the fall if I possibly can.

I've been thinking about pursuing a doctorate sometime in the near future. If my finances permitted it, I'd pursue one as soon as I finish the master's degree. I might still apply, you never know how things will work out. I'm praying really hard about it; it will mean 5 to 6 years of further study, but it will be worth it. I feel like this master's degree prepared me to be able to enter a doctoral program. I am a lot more focused and clear than I was when I started.

I need to be at a meeting at 6:30 tonight, then when I get home I have a discussion board assignment to do. For my crisis intervention class, I have a 20 page paper due on Sunday, along with a 15 page paper that's almost done, and a discussion board assignment due next week. For my Marriage & Family class, I have a 20 page paper due the following Wednesday, and a 50 item final exam on Friday, where I have already done poorly on the first three exams. The research is done (for the most part) for the papers, but I'm very slow and methodical in writing them, so I'm feeling a wee bit overwhelmed right now.

I'm also waiting for my internship paperwork to be approved. If it's not, it'll be kicked back to me to make changes. I also have to get out and do my drug test for my internship sometime tomorrow.

Can I scream now???

Now you know the source of my avatar, GNM.

Remember, you can eat an elephant one bite at a time. I have found it AMAZING how God will step in and change the dynamics by cancelling a class or something to give me just the time I need to finish.

I'll be praying!

shallbe
