Hm, that's odd. When I finally obtained my B.S. in accounting, none of the grades I earned in classes I took at other schools were factored into my GPA, only the credit transferred. Of course, the only classes that were transferrable were classes I obtained a passing grade (I have failed a few classes in the past. but I've found that has never hurt me after the fact, whether it was getting into another school or when I was interviewing for jobs after I graduated college with my accounting degree).

I know as of now, since I already have an undergrad degree, all the applicable classes I took for the degree have satisfied the general education requirements. I think maybe 2 intro to biology classes I took years ago were figured into my major requirements for biology. However, none of the grades for these 2 classes "transferred", only the credits I earned for the class (which is a relief, that means I have less credits to take for major requirements!). This semester, I'm starting "fresh". None of my past bad grades I've earned in those classes I failed have ever figured into my GPA for this semester. I guess technically I don't have a GPA as this is my first semester and won't until final grades come in in May.

Does anyone know how universities figure in prior classes and credits? I'm only going on my own experience and what I know, based on the 3 different universities (and one community college! ) I've gone to. In every case I "transferred" my previous grades I earned (whether good or bad) were never factored into my GPA.

i brought some classes from another university when i went to college. it's up to the individual university i guess to decide if they want to give you credit, how much to give, etc. they gave me credit for what they felt i did (my 2 math classes got me 3 credits at college).

so i guess they could assign grades if they wanted. for my case though, i'm with you alwaysinjoy. they did not give me grades for my transfers, just credit.

it's possible the person who went back to school reenrolled at the same school??

I sure don't know how they do it. When I send my transcripts to a school these days, I now have to order a total of SEVEN transcripts, so that's 7 schools that seem to be figuring in my grades from years ago. My GPA remains steady across the lot of them, so I don't have a clue. I just know that I have a few b's and c's from years ago, and even though I've made straight a's for 3 years, it's still 3.7.

That could be a possibility. I never re-enrolled in any of the former colleges I attended.

The university I'm at now is where I got my B.S. in accounting. I guess since I already obtained a degree, all the grades for those classes I took for the degree (even though it's the same school) didn't factor into my current GPA this semester, but they did assign me credit for all those classes I took at their school plus all the prior schools I had requested transcripts from.

Also, I didn't "re-enroll" but put in a new application for this semester as a transfer student with a B.S. degree..sheesh, it's confusing isn't it? I'm glad I don't have the job those university administrators have! While I don't have as many transcripts to request as you ShallbeRebuilt, 3 is plenty!

I guess it depends on the university what their policy is about grades obtained from other classes taken at other universities, and whether they factor it into your current GPA or not.

Nope, enrolled in different school in the same state (Kansas). Maybe it depends on the state?
Kansas' transcripts have cummulative GPAs on them and they seem to carry over from school to school.

Okay, throws that theory out the window! New hypothesis! lol. Maybe it's just Kansas. All the universities I went to were in 3 different states (Ohio, Michigan, and Virginia). Lol..hmmm...I tend to be like a dog with a bone when it comes to "unanswerable questions"

It will just have to remain a mystery. Last hypothesis: It must be due to university policy yet also may depend on the state the university is located. .

Anyways! How's everyone's studying and classes going? I can't believe I spent all night on chemistry. I feel like , but strangely not tired. Does anyone else get that way when they get in the studying "zone"? Your brain keeps working, and so you can't sleep. When you try to sleep because you're physically tired, you can't because your brain is awake!

i find that odd too. kasey, out of curiosity, on your current school transcript, the one that includes your classes from other universities, did they give you a letter grade that counts for your gpa for a class that current uni offers or that previous uni offered?

in case that's clear as mud, i mean if a previous uni offered say "Spanish 242: Advanced Language" when your new uni assigns you credit and a grade, do they list it as Spanish 242: Advanced Language or does the new uni assign what they feel is an equivalent course at the new uni and then give you an assumed grade in that course you've never taken?

I am assuming part of the reason my ugrad place didn't give grades was that it would require assuming i would make a certain grade in one of their courses, which i'd never taken. My institution didn't list the prior place's class title, but instead substituted some course they offered and thought was a reasonable replacement. If they list the actual course you took at the previous institution however, then it makes some sense, because you really did get that grade in that exact class...

I didn't know you had to include all transcripts for previous institutions if you were going back for ugrad (I knew you did for some grad levels stuff), but I guess the institution can decide to do whatever it wants.

Regardless kasey that sucks, but whatever your end gpa, when you apply for any grad program you will have a chance to explain yourself, and no one is so blind that they'll miss that your gpa for recent work is stellar and that the bad stuff was fifteen years ago, not one year ago. That upward trend is painfully obvious so i would try to not let it eat at you too much!

And Alwaysinjoy, i used to! I'm trying to get back to where i can get into my study zone... it's like learning to do those magic eye things... i gotta relax and just focus and then hopefully i'll just slip into the groove... good luck with chem! i'm gonna have to get back into those good old days too if i want to go back to school like you're doing. i'm still really drawn to med school so i know what you meanwhen you look ahead to the long prep, application, and schooling road!

still, before that, there's this. masters thesis draft returned, only a few edits. it will be a beautiful day when i get that stupid thing out the door. it's like having a 30yr old child still living at home. i want this thesis out of my house and on its own... then on to the proposal work!

Oh I didn't think of that either. You're right, with mine it was the same. They listed the equivalent courses that matched (similar) to the courses that transferred and I obtained credit. But I agree, your high GPA now in classes you've taken recently should show them you are really dedicated and hardworking student.

It'll come! It's been about 6 weeks now so I've gotten in a routine. I study whenever I have time (so it probably comes to a total of 3-4 hours a day, longer on the weekends). Nice! So what kind of graduate program are you in right now?

I have found another Masters Degree program that I am interested in. It's Regis University and the program is online and it's a Masters in Communications. I need two letters of recommendation and a critical essay. I have asked a teacher to write me one letter, now I need another one. Please pray I use discernment on whom to ask and that the person I ask says yes. Also, that I write a good essay.

thanks.

i'm in engineering (bme). i'm done with classes though so it's hard to self impose random studying that is unrelated to what i need to do for work... but i hear the mcat is an evil and cruel mistress so i know i need to get back to those classes i took ages ago if i want to do well on it... if i could pull out a few hours a day aside from my actual research work that would be soooo good... send me your orgo brilliance by telepathy if you get a chance - i saw you're gonna minor in chem....

and good luck eaglelady! i dunno what your critical essay is but if you need proofreaders you've probably got some here.

Often wish I could explain how important it is to keep your grade point high to some of the youngsters, but of course, they wouldn't listen any more than I did.

I hear you! When I would hear students say they didn't care about a grade as long as they passed, I'd cringe. A lot of grad programs won't even look at applicants with less than a 3.5. It has it's perks too...I got to waive the GRE only because I had a 3.9. I was soooo stressed over that test and was thrilled to get a waiver! I've also heard of prospective employers wanting transcripts of new graduates because they feel it shows their dedication and work ethics. That GPA does help out in a lot of cases, and comes back to bite you on the tush in others :-o

Praying for you, eaglelady. It sounds like a good opportunity for you

My mini-vacation is over, and it was back to class last night!

You need my brilliance? Engineering is no walk in the park either! I have also heard evil things about the MCAT.. When do you hope to take it? Maybe I should be asking you for some brilliance right now!! lol. I have been working on a chem lab report due tomorrow morning (bright and early at 8:30.lol) and I got stuck on one part of the experiment. It was driving me nuts all night and I don't think it's right at all. No, I know it's not but...argh. I just need to vent a little here..

So the experiment was on identifying unknown aqueous solutions (5 of them). We were told the pH of the solution and observed the color of it. Then we were given 5 categories of solutions and 3 solutions in each category of what it could be. (for instance, strong acid and strong base were 2 categories).

Well, basically to find this "unknown" you have to mix a few drops of the unknown to a known "test" solution (such as sodium chloride solution, salt solution). You observe the color of the solid product and based on a handy list you are given of common insoluble product colors do a sort of trial and error using balanced equations (plug in hypothesized unknown with the test solution it reacted with) to determine what you think is the known.

I can NOT figure it out! It was given the unknown was a strong base, but 2 of the 3 strong bases didin't work out. The 3rd so-called strong base is actually ammonia, a WEAK base! . And I actually got it to "work" out.

So I put in the conclusion of my lab report "There were 2 possible choices for the unknown. Ammonia was not one of them as it was a weak base. However, I said it was deduced that ammonia was the *likely* identity of the unknown based on the observed color and how it produced an insoluble product while the other 2 either didn't produce the right color or didn't produce an insoluble product.

I kind of um...BS'ed (pardon my language!) my way to why it was ammonia but also said there were possible errors like not thoroughly rinsing test tubes before doing the experiment.

OH well. I have finished it. I'm not going to work on it anymore! It's going to be turned in with that answer and we'll see after spring break next week what grade I get...

Oh and I got my chem professor to sign off on my minor declaration form this morning. (He's the advisor for students wanting to minor in chem). I haven't turned it into the registrar's office yet but once I do it'll be official...I'll officially be a geek!

Yay! I registered for my final semester of classes! I'm so excited. Just three more classes, my internship, and a comprehensive exam to go, then I'm all done. This has been quite a journey -- a labor of love. Looking back, it seems that time has gone by quickly, but so much has transpired between 8/07 and now. But before I get too nostalgic, I still have a lot of work ahead of me.

Yay! That's great! I wish it was my final semester. So how did you see God working in your life as you made the decision to go back to school and do this? How did He help you get through it all? To keep you on this path He's set for you?

I ask because I feel ever since I made this decision to go back to school (I made the decision last August and that's when I put in my application), I am aware of God more now than I ever have (well, since I first became a Christian!). What I mean is, I can see his Hand in my life, nudging things into place quite a few times where I know it's God. I feel He is using all the obstacles that have come up since I started this to make me rely on Him for everything. Does that make sense?

It's gotten to the point where now, I trust Him to provide as I believe very much this path I'm on is where He wants me to be. I still don't know what the end result is, but I trust He will show me the way. I feel like it's been one step at a time where He reveals to me what He wants me to do.

For instance, I have been praying to God about helping me go to school full-time and work part-time 20 hours a week while I go to school (since I need some income coming in to pay for expenses). I wasn't working enough at my current job to get that and I couldn't figure out how it could happen, when I looked at the situation with my human eyes it seemed impossible, but we all know with God it's not!

I prayed long and hard about it constantly, all the while trying to live my life to be right with God. Not to gain anything from Him of course, but to show Him how thankful I am that He's been with me all the way. Anyways, right when I needed it, God provided it and it was exactly what I needed no more no less!! (I calculated I have a set amount of income I need every month) One of my co-workers suddenly got a job offer and they wanted her ASAP and so literally in a matter of days I was covering part of her shift!

Then when I decided I needed to take 2 summer classes this summer, again I started wondering how I could do this. As everyone knows summer classes are more demanding, I found my classes met 4 days a week for 2 hours each, the labs met 3 days a week for 3 hours each. I couldn't work during the week as it would just be impossible to study then so I had to cut the hours back a lot at the place I'm at (only thing the vet I work for doesn't have many weekend hours consistently, only weekdays).

So I prayed to God about it a lot, and just recently (on friday!) I got a job offer from a friend of the family for working part-time on weekends only and the employer told me I can even STUDY at work!(I'm talking a good 2-3 hours straight of study time.lol) . I wasn't even looking for this job, like the first time with my co-worker it was dropped into my lap an opportunity I couldn't ignore.

Oh well, sorry for going on but I wanted to share with everyone how God is working in my life. Now I don't worry too much about how everything will work out with school. I really feel if you feel called to do something, and it's in God's will, then it will happen no matter what! It's not going to be easy, but I know He wouldn't give me something more than I can handle.

Now the next thing I need to tackle is finding research opportunity with a professor on campus. I already emailed 4 this morning, heard back from one and she doesn't have any openings until Fall. Not too sad about that, but she told me she likes her undergrad students to have taken biochemistry, immunology, and microbiology. I am taking microbiology this summer so that's not a problem. However I can't take the other 2 yet because I need the prereqs to take them and I won't be able to do that until next spring and summer!

So please pray I can get an opportunity this Fall somehow! I know it's not impossible, I trust God will provide.

Btw, Grace-N-Mercy I'm not sure if I asked you as well, but what degree are you going for? What do you hope to do when you finish? I know you mentioned you're interning at a hospice, working with the elderly, how long have you been doing that?

Michelle, that's great! I can imagine how much of a relief that is!!

Today, I had my second interview with the agency I want to to my practicum/intern work in. The interview was with a panel of 6 therapists! Not the easiest thing but it went really well and was much more comfortable than I thought it would be. Even the rapid firing of questions wasn't to bad! I thought it would be at least a day or two before I heard, but as the supervisor walked me out, she said I had the position and began telling me what arrangements come next. I was sooo happy! I have such a good feeling about being there. God is good!

Oh, it has been an interesting journey, filled with tears and joys. About a year ago, I went through a very difficult time filled with losses and major frustrations at work. It all came to a head in January of last year and I took my own advice and went to see a counselor. We had several really good sessions, mostly about me looking for another career path. I was completely fed up, frustrated, discouraged, and feeling completely incompetent and I wanted out! Together, we investigated several options, ways for me to maybe get a graduate certificate in statistics or research, or something that would put me in an office and away from people for a while. But one after another, the doors just slammed shut! What I wanted and thought I needed, God was saying "no", loud and clear.

Then in July, I went back to class (my on-campus classes are one week long, the rest of my classes are online.) Well, the director from the internship program came in to speak to us, and while she talked, I tuned her out because I just knew it would be a full year before I was ready for internship because I was working full-time and taking my classes part-time. My internship would need to be after my work-day and last about a year. I would be working 70+ hours a week to get it all done, and I wasn't looking forward to that at all!!

Well, the director said something very interesting and immediately I knew just what I had to do. She said that while we were in internship, we had to take at least one other class to put us to part-time status if we wanted to receive financial aid. Oh my word! There was NO WAY I could add another class to my work and internship schedule I had planned... unless I changed plans and left my job. Immediately, there was such a peace that rushed over me. I pulled out a piece of paper and started working it all out, especially finances. It might work! Then I went back to the hotel room that night and worked it all out!! WooHoo!!! I was going to leave the job that was bringing me such stress AND finish school a year earlier than planned!!

Things have run smoothly since that day! I went back to work and God worked it out so I would be able to tell my supervisor face-to-face exactly why I was leaving. I was able to tell both of my colleagues the same day, too. I continued working another month, then took three online classes during the Fall.. I was able to sit at home the whole time and just relax and do my work!! What a relief! That was a major vacation and so much needed. Finances have worked out smoothly too. I have had a LOT of unexpected expenses, and in my planning, there was no room for them. But as I near the last few months, it looks like I'm going to make it, though I might need to borrow a small amount to get me through. No, I may not get the class ring I want and may not make it to campus to walk for graduation, but I will get to walk at church when they have their graduation ceremony.

Oh, and I am going for an MA in Professional Counseling, to practice as a mental health counselor in Florida. My internship with Hospice started in mid-January, and so far, I'm really enjoying it.

Together, we investigated several options, ways for me to maybe get a graduate certificate in statistics or research, or something that would put me in an office and away from people for a while. But one after another, the doors just slammed shut! What I wanted and thought I needed, God was saying "no", loud and clear.

I understand that!lol Before I made the decision to go back to school last August, it seemed every door slammed shut when I was trying to decide on other careers outside of accounting! When I finally said to myself "Okay, I'm going to do what I've always wanted to do, go back to school to go for biology", doors opened and I've gotten this far already!

quote:

Isn't it amazing how it all falls into place when we trust God to get us through it? I've gone through the same things myself, I couldn't see it working out at first but then I decided to believe God would get me through it because I am doing what He wants me to do.

Wow, I just think it's amazing how God works in each of our lives!

How long does your internship last?

Michelle, that's great! I can imagine how much of a relief that is!!

Today, I had my second interview with the agency I want to to my practicum/intern work in. The interview was with a panel of 6 therapists! Not the easiest thing but it went really well and was much more comfortable than I thought it would be. Even the rapid firing of questions wasn't to bad! I thought it would be at least a day or two before I heard, but as the supervisor walked me out, she said I had the position and began telling me what arrangements come next. I was sooo happy! I have such a good feeling about being there. God is good!

A panel of six people?! I know I would be so nervous if I had to go through a panel interview with that many people.lol.

It sounds like you impressed them very much if you were told you had it while you were leaving! That is great, if only all interviews could go like that so you wouldn't be left wondering "Do I have it or don't I?"

That's awesome you got it! And AMEN God is so good!

I'm posting to give everyone (and myself ) encouragement to get through the semester! I'm at the half-way mark. Two months of the semester has gone by, with I think 7 weeks left until spring semester is over. It's been a bit hard to keep focused because the weather has finally turned SPRING-LIKE!

I am ready for the semester to be finished. How's everyone else doing?

Hey, Karlie & alwaysinjoy! How are y'all doing in your classes? I wish I had the time to properly respond to your posts, but spare time is a thing of my past.

This is going to be my biggest semester yet... my first doctoral-level course. It's a requirement for the program and the only 700-level course, so don't think I'm going to be taking any other doctoral-level courses again anytime soon.

Just a glimpse of what this course is like:

Textbook readings: four books
Additional readings: five major websites and a number of journal articles, plus course materials including power point presentations.
Discussion board postings (3): These are all-class assignments
Group discussion board postings (2): These are small-group assignments
Project Presentation: A power-point presentation + notes for a 50-60 minute presentation (online students will not deliver the presentation orally). Topic is a subject related to substance abuse/addictions
Research Paper: 15-20 pages. This is a Biblical word study on counseling and addiction related terms

Whew! This is gonna be quite a class! Let's see, what did I forget?? Oh yeah, the research paper is due on Sunday of week SIX, and the presentation is due on Wednesday of week SEVEN!!

I might just have to reduce the hours of my internship so I'm getting off early one day a week to give me a little extra time... we'll see.

So how are y'all doing? Are you able to push through despite the Spring-time weather?

It's spring break for me and I'm glad because there are so many things to catch up this week; taxes, going to the neurologist with my son, an interview for one class, a long-term project start for the other one.

I'm just very, very tired. It's been a long month. I'm glad my husband convinced me to go down to part time. I'm having a hard time being motivated at all this semester.

No spring break for me anymore. This is the first time in all my years of being in school that I haven't had a traditional spring break...it kind of stinks!!

I have two papers due tonight PLUS a 30 minute presentation to give, and the final is on Saturday. That's a lot crammed into one week, but I think I'm ready. Well not for the exam! But, I have tomorow and Friday to prepare more for that. I'll feel better once tonight's presentation is out of the way. Funny, I can sing in front of a few thousand people and be fine, but talking in front of 25 stresses me no end!

Whoa!!! I have the same reaction as you.lol. I think it's great you're being so positive! Many people would just say it's impossible, but I'm sure you can handle it all. It sounds like it's 4 or 5 classes in one. How many students are in the class? You inspire me to keep going too!!! woohoo!

LOL, that is funny! I couldn't do either, I hate speaking in front of big audiences.. . How did your presentation go? I'm scratching my head about 2 papers due in one night.lol. How's that possible?

Well, I am keeping ahead of my classes and I'm doing really good. I have an A in chemistry and biology so far. I got a 100% on my 2nd bio exam this week! I was so happy! I have my 2nd chem exam next Tuesday but I'm not worried. I'm sure I can get an A again!!

I need to learn to get myself to bed at a decent hour. I seem to do these "stay-up-past-midnight" during the weekdays only to get tired by friday and catch up on sleep over the weekend only to do it again during the week.

How do you all study for your classes? I mean, what is your study habits? I tend to do a few hours each day (whenever I can spare..when I'm not working or sleeping or eating or in class. ). I get lab reports done within a day or so of the lab experiment. I'll read the chapters to be covered in that day's lecture, write up notes on the chapter, do problems, etc. I put down all major exam, quiz, paper due dates for the entire semester so I'm aware of when important dates will come a month before they come.lol. Then I do a week-by-week "to do list". I set mini-deadlines of what I need to get done by what day (say "read chapter 2 bio by Friday).

I find this way I don't have to ever really "cram" for exams. By time exam comes all I need to do is a review, no hard core studying because I "study" throughout the entire time, about 4 weeks, leading up to each exam.

It seems to work for me, but everyone has their own study habit, so what's yours?
