and to be honest...when ours were little and it was hot...I just doubled the diaper and didn't use any cover at all when we were at home.......

HA! Wow that would be a lot of cleaning rags. There should be no excuse for the house not getting clean then!
I'm going to try the fasteners with the prefolds I bought. If I don't like how it's all working, I will see about switching. Ryan didn't seem too optimistic about it.

prefolds also make great nose wipers when little one gets a cold or is teething..they are softer than tissues...and can be washed in very very hot water....

What detergent do you like to use? I need to wash my covers but right now all I have is Tide and I know that that will be hard on the covers.
I bought Thirsties Duo Wraps. So far I love them. However, as expected the gerber diapers are not so great. They really don't absorb much. So I am looking into getting some Kissaluvs. Size wise I think they will both be wearing the same. I'm just not sure how much to get. As of now I will start with 12 just to see how I like them. If they work well then I will get more.

I generally use Ivory detergent for diapers...but I also use Tide. The key is to use vinegar in your rinse water...that gets all the detergent OUT of the diapers and covers....as well as balancing the PH level of the material...
I never had any trouble with the gerber diapers. Maybe it was the area of the country that I bought them in?

I use 1/2 cup added to the rinse cycle....I usually would put it in those little Downy balls :) that way I wouldn't forget it.
You may need to lose less IF you have softer water.
Make sure it is white vinegar...cider vinegar will work...but leaves a smell behind....

I put about 1/4 cup in and it worked well. They smell much better. They were already starting to get a funk smell to them. I am finding that I'm having to run them a little longer in the dryer. They feel like they are still a little damp after a cycle.
I'm going to have to order a few more diapers. I have 18 and that's not quite enough.

Talking about Kissaluvs and the quantities we bought:
Size 0: Bought 18 diapers, 6 small doublers, 4 Bummis covers, 12 prefolds (Should have gotten a few more doublers and covers) [He was in this size for 15 weeks.]
Size 1: Bought 14 diapers, 7 big doublers, 5 Bummis covers [He was in this size for at least 45 or 47 weeks, can't remember offhand....he's not a big kid so it took him a while to outgrow this size.]
Size 2: Bought 12 diapers, didn't need more doublers, 6 Bummis covers [He is 17 months and in this size currently. I'm not sure that he will last in this size as he gets taller, though they're fine for the waist and seat by far. This is the biggest size they have so if he outgrows them in height we'll have to figure out the next step.]
Ours are the natural or unbleached or whatever PLAIN colors of everything. We don't decorate with diapers. 
We do laundry every day, usually. Every once in a while we skip a day, but we never run out of diapers.

Which doublers do you like to use. The kissaluvs are nice diapers, but I need just a little extra layer for the night. However I'm concerned about bulk. Veronica is already chubby enough that I don't need to add more to her booty (if you get what I'm saying).

Jeanie, how do you get the BG wrap to fit around the kissaluv diaper? I have troubles getting it to fit properly inbetween the legs. The waist fits very well, but I'm always having to really tuck in and finagle the wrap around the diaper around the back of the legs. Any tips or suggestions?

GMD (green mountain diaper) prefolds are awesome. We'll be cloth diapering our second and I'm so excited. I use charlies soap as detergent and am prepping with Rockin Green for fun. (she has some yummy scents) I still prefer charlies soap..
I'm also knitting plenty of wool covers because wool is my favorite. I want to try AIOs and pockets but am a little worried I'll like them too much since they can be pricey. I've heard imse vimse AIOs are nice and now there are best bottom diapers I want to try. I'm trying to stick to prefolds for the newborn stage and my son's fitted stash once he outgrows the infant prefolds.

Has anybody ever used a diaper rental service? We're thinking of doing that for the first month; they'll rent you a bunch of newborn diapers so you don't have to buy a whole bunch of stuff baby will outgrow quickly. They also give you a credit twds diaper purchase if you decide to get some. I'm also hoping that renting them will help convince DH that it won't be as much work as he thinks it is.

Archer had asked a question about diapers in the preg thread so I thought I would bump this thread up. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with prefolds and a cover. They seem to be the cheapest choice/combination. However many women like AIO (All In One) diapers. However, they are much pricier and take a little more work to clean/dry. Fitteds are nice and require a cover.
So what I have right now are some kissaluvs which are my back up when all my prefolds are used up. I have a few Green Earth Textile prefolds, and have just received a new order of Diaper Rite Indian prefolds from Diaper Junction. With prefolds, there is a difference in size depending where you get them from. My DR prefolds are shorter in the rise and a little wider than the Green Earth. It is a bit more difficult to snappi/pin them around the girls compared to the Green Earth.
If you want to go prefold, many women love Green Mountian Diapers (they are a little more pricey for prefolds) or Little Lion. Since I am not able to snappi/pin my DR I am considering getting a few GMD for my stash. I want to build up enough of a stash so that I can do laundry every 2-3 days. However I need to get more covers to be able to do that.

Bumping again (and de-lurking)...
So after four months we're finally in CD permanently. Although during the 3rd month we were doing diaper trials so I guess those count, but we hadn't bought anything then. We're lucky we live in a big city; we did three different trials from different shops; there were three or four more we could have done if we'd wanted other options.
We're doing prefolds because a friend gave me her stash; we may have to upsize soon as the snappi isn't working for some that have shrunk. I'd love to do fitteds for overnights/naps, but eh, prefolds are cheaper.
Covers I love: Booroi (sorta like pockets but without the fleece--work great with prefolds, Sugar Peas fleece, without whick I probably would have given up on overnight cloth diapering, and Sweet Peas PUL covers. As you can tell I am not into velcro.
Still haven't decided whether to buy wipes. Using plain ol baby washcloths for now, but I find they aren't very soft, and tend to make the laundry staticky.
Also loving the Fuzzi Bunz hanging diaper pail. Pretty sure it's the reason we haven't got any pail smell, although it works better on the bathroom door--no sunlight, and better ventilation.

I'm starting to think I need to move my diaper pail someplace else. My diaper corner is in the front of the living room where the morning sun beams it's way through. It gets warm in the living room so it tends to smell a bit more.
I'm slowly working my way out of my prefolds. I'm not going to put them away completely because they work great as "stuffers" for my pockets, but I'm ready to start "simplifying" my stash. So, mom has helped me buy some Kawaii AIO dipaers. They are comparable to BG 3.0/4.0 but much cheaper. I'm really looking forward to getting them. So far for the new baby though, all I have are prefolds. I hope they work for him.

I used cloth because I like to think of myself as environmentally friendly. also we lived in the country - free water but we had to haul our garbage to a dump that was a 20 minute drive away. I bought a diaper pattern from a catalog called Baby Love, and my mom and sister and I sewed them from flannel. They had three rows of Velcro, so fit from newborn right up to toddler. The whole diaper was two layers thick, so flexible, but the bottom was 8 layers thick, but one panel of 4 layers was sewn in and another 4 layer panel was only attached at one end, so they dried faster. Great pattern.
I used a "wet" pail, water and a product called Diaper Pure. I would just dump the pail and contents into the washer (rinsed the liner in the toilet after a poopy) and put them through a rinse cycle before the wash.
I used cloth wipes. To have warm water right on the change table, I got a large pump style thermos and put it on the change table, and just replaced the water every other day.

I have some prefolds/covers and I just ordered 12 flats (shh don't tell Ryan this cause I'm not supposed to buy any more). But hey, it was only $12 for a dozen diapers! I'm thinking too for the first month since he won't be mobile, I will just use the flats/prefolds without the covers so his little bum can breathe. If we go anywhere then I will use the cover.
