We've had a lot of rain recently and now the humidity is almost unbearable. I had one of those very fatigued days but I was determined to wait until it cooled down in the late pm and ride my bike. I'm always glad afterwards that I make myself get going. Some days I'm not as successful but overall I am getting a handle on getting enough exercise during the week to stay fit. Getting to bed earlier tonight and tomorrow will do my run and weight training.

I tell you, heat and humidity can drain you and hurt you if not careful. So all through the day I try and drink plenty of water if I'm going to be outside after work.

Sorry about the high humidity Walker. I grew up in Michigan but have lived in Colorado for almost 20 years now but I still remember what high humidity was like. It is difficult to just function let alone exercise. The good thing about Summer for me is it forces me to get up early to exercise before the heat starts. I already have a 2 mile walk in this morning! Woohoo!

Didn't get much exercise this weekend (it was a long weekend here, so three days = no exercise). I have an exam Friday and I'm just "hanging on" until then.

Wish I could think of some way to review music history notes while exercising!

Not a bad idea for next time. My exam's on Friday though, so until then I'm missing a couple of workouts. Still going today and tomorrow at lunch though.

I was planning on getting up early this morning for a two mile walk but that didn't happen. The client I was working for today lives in a senior high rise. She is on the third floor and laundry is on the second floor. I usually take the elevator but today I did the stairs. It was probably ten flights if you add up all the times I went from the first to the third to the second to the third etc.

Yesterday I did 10 minutes picking green beans before I had to quit due to being out of breath because of my cold.

Hello All,

What a wonderful way to be encouraged and to encourage one another.

I joined a gym in January of this year. I made a commitment to myself that I would workout at least 4-6 times a week.
To date I've lost 45lbs, and I'm feeling so much better physically and spiritually. I just turned 52 this past June
so believe me this journey has been tedious... I have a goal to lose 45 more lbs by January of 2010.

I would like to encourage all to hang in there and stay committed. The real challenge for me will be continuing excercising after
I reach my goal...

God bless you ALL!

I just joined the Isabody Challenge. It began a couple of weeks ago and goes for a year. I had been an avid walker for years, but things got busy several months ago and I haven't gotten back in to it. I really want to. Before I started working, I walked and stretched daily and had become very toned. I haven't gained any weight back, but I just don't feel as toned.

So my goal for this year is to get back to taking a walk at least 4 times a week. I have also been working on some target spots to be leaner. I've done it before so I know I can do it again except for my arms. I'd like them to be sleeveless-worthy. I'm almost 47 so I'm noticing more and more loss of muscle tone (as well as skin tone) in my arms. I have been working with free weights, doing push-ups and dips for the past month. Any other suggestions?

Monamie, if you're a member of a gym, the pulley machine can be a great way to work out your shoulders/upper back/arms. Also, give tricep pushups a shot if you haven't tried them yet.

Less-than-ideal workout yesterday as my usual class was out of tickets 20 mins before it started. Who has time to get to the gym 20 minutes early? Clearly not people on their lunchbreak. Still, I got in a short run and a round of weights.

Made up for it today by sweating so hard in my latin dance class that I probably should have washed my hair afterward. I don't know how I enjoyed going to the gym before I found that class--not to mention that it's the best standing-up core workout I've ever had.

at least you have tickets.. my gym overcrowds each class. Very irritating.

Will join another one but haven't found one that is a decent replacement.. because other than that.. it was top of the line but now they are trying to save some money.. but the competition is supposed to be moving in so we'll see.

It has been so hot that I have switched from hiking. The last one was 13 miles in Crystal Cove State Park--between Laguna and Newport Beach. Gym classes such as Turbo Kick Boxing and Strength Endurance Training (weights) really pump me up emotionally--I love it!

I am still suprised at the amount of mental effort it takes for me to run. I'm psyching myself up before, at the beginning, and all during my 30 minute run. I am always glad that I did it and I always feel great afterwards but it is such an ordeal. I actually enjoy biking more but it take longer to get the same workout as running gives.

Going by the treadmill stats, I'm running 2.85 miles in 30 minutes. I am going to push for a 3 mile 30 minute run next time. I think this may be the problem. I need to push myself more. I've been running the same speed for several months.

As for strength training, I definitely see the toning in my arms and chest but I've still got a belly. I think I better get some coaching.

Hannah, just join right on in; the idea is to keep everybody posted with your exercise efforts for the day; it's like having an accountability partner, but one that won't get on your case if you miss a day.

Oh, ours overcrowds most classes too, but for any class that needs equipment (eg spinning, step aerobics and free-weights classes) they do tickets because there's only so much equipment to go around. The only non-equipment class they do tickets for is a core back/abs class, because it's so popular.

I can't believe the difference yesterday's Zumba class made in my mood; literally went from blue funk to happy and energized. Who can be sad after a latin cardio dance class?

I don't have to psych myself up to go for a run, but I do when I'm off the wagon or working back to up fit-enough-to-run. When I actually go for a run it's more like "woohoo! I get to exercise outdoors for a change!"

No workout today; had an exam all morning so no lunch break, but at least I had a half-hour walk to the bus stop (with very heavy textbook-laden backpack).

Okay. I think I need to jump in here. I've been trying to get myself back on some kind of workout schedule for some time now. Unlike most of you runners, I'm a swimmer (synchronized). I got out of my 6 days a week swimming when I moved to my new apartment. The gym was further away and the water made me physically sick. So it was quite easy to stop going. The pools that didn't make me sick all seemed to shut down for repairs all at the same time.

Anyhoo....that was the last of my regularly scheduled swims outside of our team practice on Sunday afternoons.

Which brings me to my latest problem. Nationals is coming up at the end of October and I'd really like to be in much better shape than I am right now. I checked out the video from our last meet in July when I swam my solo and all I can say is "Yeesh!"

Last week, I did okay. Practice on Sunday, synchro class on Monday, gym on Wednesday and four glorious hours at the swim center on Friday.

This week I've only managed one visit to the swim center on Thursday morning because I've been putting in crazy hours on the day job.

Now, I'm trying to get myself motivated to try the rollerblading thing again tomorrow morning. I did it two weeks ago and was terrified it would kill my legs for practice the next day, but it worked out. My boosts feel stronger. A boost is when you jump out of the water without touching the bottom. I feel like I'm starting to get my waist out above the surface. Considering the size of my belly, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing......

Why do you need to push yourself more?

I guess I just dont see whats wrong with maintaining something. Especially when I see the under arms of a 4 10" woman who used to bench press 90 pounds. She is now 77 years old and all that muscle went under her arms now, as she so aptley pointed out.
Is it true that if you get alot of muscle, then dont keep up with it, it droops?

The muscle doesn't. The skin can though as it loses elasticity as you age.

There are some very fit senior citizens at my gym but a lot of them do have saggy skin.

Good for that woman! I want to be her. It's always humbling when people twice your age are kicking your butt at the gym

Woo-hoo! I ran 3 miles on the treadmill under 32 minutes. I think I understand what Walker311 may mean by pushing yourself. Running is rather monotonous and very much a mental game that you play with you yourself. I am not sure if there has ever been a time I did not have to talk myself out of quitting. Setting goals and pushing yourself adds the thrill of the challenge. It keeps it interesting. I am working on dropping to under a 30 minutes 3 mile run and very soon, sooner that I want, I will go for 5 miles. I need that challenge in my workout. After I achieve those goals I will set new ones.

I started back exercising thursday on my Total Gym, but I just worked out my upper body and abs. I guess I need to go slow at first. Tonight I walked approximately 1 mile. O.K. for a start. I reckon. Hopefully, I will continue to work at this.
